A news update is a brief report on an event that is happening now, or that has just happened. News updates often include reaction and background information to put the current story in context. They should follow the inverted pyramid style, with the most important information (the news angle) appearing in the lead. Then, you should add more information that is necessary to understand the main story. Finally, you can add additional information that is interesting or informative but not crucial to understanding the news.
If possible, use a person’s first and last name on first reference (not just a single initial). This ensures that readers know who the person is and avoids jarring them with abrupt switches between first and third person. Likewise, in captions, it’s better to use a person’s full middle initial than just their first.
